KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 21 — Bombs were not behind the fire that broke out in the carpark near the Taman Jaya LRT station in Selangor today, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said.
The top policeman took to Twitter to quash the online rumours that started spreading over the cause of the fire.
“Someone set a car ablaze at parking of Lrt Taman Jaya, Pj. There was no bomb explosion. @PDRMsia is investigating a case of mischief by fire,” he posted on his Twitter account @KBAB51.
Khalid said the police are investigating the fire at the parking lot.
Photos of a fire with billowing clouds of dark smoke were all over Twitter earlier this afternoon, with warnings to the public to be wary of what was alleged to be a bomb explosion.
In what appeared to be well-meaning advice, these Twitter users urged others to “stay safe” and “be extra careful”.
The tweets that mentioned bombs were later removed from the microblogging website.
According to The Star Online, six cars were involved in the fire at around 1pm today which was put out by firefighters in 30 minutes.
The Fire and Rescue Department’s spokesman said four of the six cars were badly damaged while 20 per cent of the two other cars were burnt, the news site said.
Train operator Prasarana clarified in a statement that the fire did not occur at its Taman Jaya LRT station or its carpark, adding that the incident had taken place at a carpark next to the station.
“Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire. No injuries reported. Train services are not affected and are operating as usual,” it said.
