Flood victims in Johor, Perak evacuated to relief centres, officials say

JOHOR BARU, Dec 7 — A total of 265 victims from 75 families who were affected by the floods have been evacuated to three relief centres in Batu Pahat, today.

Batu Pahat District Officer Mohd Halim Hasbullah said, until 2pm, all the victims were evacuated to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Suria Perdana, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Seri Paya dan SK Parit Bingan.

“All the victims from several villages in Seri Gading were evacuated after their houses were flooded due to heavy rain for the past two days as well as the high tide,” he said when contacted by Bernama today.

He said 115 flood victims from 31 families were given temporary shelter in SMK Suria Perdana, 9l flood victims from 30 families were at SK Seri Paya evacuation centre, while another 59 victims from 14 families were staying at SK Parit Bingan.

Relevant agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Department and Social Welfare Department were monitoring the situation, he said.

Meanwhile, in Ipoh, 79 flood victims from 18 families from two villages in Sungai Siput were evacuated to two evacuation centres.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Yahya Madis said a total of 57 victims from 11 families from Kampung Tok Sirat were housed at the village’s community hall.

“Another 22 victims from seven families in Kampung Lintang were evacuated at Datuk Haji Fadil Community Hall,” he said, adding that the villages were flooded to a depth of 0.3 metres to 0.5 metres following heavy rain. — Bernama
