KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 — Local men’s magazine FHM Malaysia announced that it will cease operations here following the decision by UK publisher Bauer Media to suspend the publication of FHM UK indefinitely.
According to its announcement, the local edition will enjoy one final run before it discontinues publication.
“In line with the suspension of FHM UK, Astro Digital Publications have evaluated the current situation and have come to the decision that FHM Malaysia will cease after its January 2016 issue,” the local publisher announced on Twitter yesterday.
Bauer announced on November 17 that it was halting operations of the FHM UK and ZOO magazines by the end of the year.
FHM is the acronym of the magazine’s full title, “For Him Magazine”. It published its first issue in 1985 and quickly gained its position as one of the best known “lads’ mags” in the UK and elsewhere.
As with most printed media, FHM was affected by the ongoing switch towards digital media, with circulation numbers in the UK falling to less than 10 per cent of the 700,000 copies it sold during its peak in the 2000s.
The magazine is arguably best known for its annual list of “100 Sexiest Women in the World”, with supermodel Claudia Schiffer being the first to top the poll in 1995 and actress Michelle Keegan the last to take home the award as this year’s winner.
Aside from the main UK edition, FHM was also printed in 27 countries including Malaysia.
The Singapore edition closed earlier this month, with publisher MediaCorp citing changing consumer habits.
