KOTA SAMARAHAN, Nov 28 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today he is leaving it to Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem to decide when to call for the next state election.
“I do not know until when you can wait for this special day, and it is up to him to make the decision,” he said at the opening of the 40th national-level Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen’s Day here today.
The term of the current Sarawak state assembly automatically expires on June 20 next year, if the chief minister does not advise the Governor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud to dissolve the assembly earlier.
The coming election will see an increase of 11 seats to the current 71-seat Sarawak assembly.
In the 2011 state polls, the Barisan Nasional (BN) won 55 seats while DAP snapped up 12, PKR three and an independent took one seat.
The bulk of the seats won by the Sarawak BN are located largely in the state’s interiors while the DAP swept most of the urban and semi-urban seats.
Najib, who is also BN chairman, said he is aware that the ruling pact much of its support from the rural folk.
“Therefore, we will reciprocate their support for the BN. We will continue to provide basic amenities and infrastructures to them, like providing treated water supply, electricity and roads,” he said.
He said the federal government has allocated RM70 million as special loans for the construction of new longhouses and villages in the state.
“I will continue to visit as many places in the rural areas of Sarawak as possible. This shows that the BN cares for the rural population,” he said.
