KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27 ― The younger brother of murdered deputy public prosecutor Anthony Kevin Morais has declared the statutory declaration made by Charles Suresh, the second eldest of the siblings, as suspicious.

Datuk Richard Morais was quoted by Malay daily Utusan Malaysia as saying that Charles’ claim was dodgy as the slain DPP had a reputation for being disciplined and never shared work-related information with family members.

“Isn't it weird that Kevin would send important information to him when he was not even included in Kevin's will, in fact he (Charles) never paid a single cent for the burial. It was all paid by me,” Richard was quoted as saying.

Charles claimed two days ago that Kevin had sent out a pen drive for safekeeping before his murder over two months ago.

According to a signed statutory declaration (SD) released by Charles, Kevin’s last call to him was about a week before he went missing in September, during which the latter “sounded very depressed” and informed him to watch out for “something” that would be couriered over to him for safekeeping.

Charles, who claimed that he kept close relations and was constantly in touch with Kevin, added that his brother had claimed that his phone was tapped.

But Richard told Utusan that it was unlikely for Kevin to share such information with Charles.

“Kevin was a very disciplined man, he is the type not to share work-related information especially to family members. I'm doubtful that he would have done so,” he was quoted as saying.

Charles claimed the pendrive is currently in the US for safekeeping.

He did not, however, elaborate on the contents of the pen drive but merely said in the SD that Kevin had informed him prior to his death that he was working on a case involving some powerful individuals.

In the SD, Charles wrote: “I am convinced that Kevin knew something was going to happen to him. I could sense this from the conversations I had with him over the phone shortly before he was abducted.”

He also highlighted as one example Kevin’s visit to lawyers in London to make an August 13 will to give away an apartment there to a close friend.

Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar had also cast doubt over Charles’ character, saying the police has information about him and what he did before he left for the US.

Khalid said as such, he warned Charles against making “baseless allegations” and urged the latter to share whatever information he has regarding the murder of his brother with the police.

* An earlier version of the story erroneously listed Datuk Richard Morais as the youngest and Charles Suresh as the eldest of the Morais siblings. The error is regretted and the story has been corrected.
