KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 — Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) claimed today their members were being targeted by religious extremists due to their stand on Islam.
Party vice-president Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa said the tendency to champion an "absolute truth" in Islam in Malaysia has caused some Muslims to be intolerant against those who held different ideals.
“Among the extremist ideology that infects Malaysia is the idea of absolute truth thus allowing labels such as ‘munafik’ and accusing fellow Muslims with different thinking as heathens," the Parit Buntar MP told a news conference at the Parliament lobby here.
Such people, he added, shared characteristics similar to Islamic State (IS) terrorists.
Also present at the same news conference was Datuk Raja Kamarul Baharin who said threats have been received by three members over the last two weeks, with one purportedly threatened in his own house over the weekend.
“The authorities seem indifferent so far. And these attacks, dare I say that it, seem like a planned, concerted effort against our members of Amanah,” said the Kuala Terengganu MP.
When asked to identify those whom he alleged were targeting Amanah members, Mujahid claimed that they were from Islamist party PAS, of which Amanah is an offshoot.
“We were told most of them come from PAS members, very clear,” he said.
Mujahid was quick to clarify, however, that the main issue was the alleged extremism and not that those purportedly targeting his party’s leaders were from PAS.
He then urged the authorities to act swiftly over his claims and not to dismiss these as just a political dispute between PAS and Amanah.
He also suggested to PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang to pay close attention to his followers' action to prevent further trouble.
Amanah leaders are former PAS members who were voted out of the Islamist party's top leadership in the last muktamar.
