KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 — PKR lawmaker Nurul Izzah Anwar may lose her parliamentary privileges for alleged disloyalty to the country, a federal minister warned today after photos spread showing the Lembah Pantai MP with the daughter of Jamalul Kiram III, the man who ordered the invasion of Lahad Datu in Sabah in 2013.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the meeting between the PKR lawmaker and Jacel Kiram could be seen as an attempt to invite foreign interference in Malaysia’s domestic affairs.

“What is the motive behind meeting with the spokesman for a terrorist group?” Azalina said in a statement issued late this evening.

“As an MP she should know her responsibility especially when it comes to national sovereignty that cannot be compromised.

“How could an MP be willing to meet with the ‘spokesman’ for a terrorist group that invaded our country, what more to hold up a poster bearing the words — FILIPINO FRIENDS?” Azalina added.

The minister said Nurul Izzah’s actions have contravened her oath of office as an MP to be loyal to the country, and that Putrajaya is considering referring the PKR vice-president to Parliament’s rights and privileges committee.

Pictures of Nurul Izzah and Jacel Kiram are being circulated online, sparking outrage among netizens who asked why the PKR vice-president would associate herself with the daughter of the self-styled former Sultan of Sulu.

The daughter of former opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was criticised as being insensitive, with some claiming her association with the Kiram family insulted Malaysian security personnel who died fighting Sulu militants who invaded the Sabah district of Lahad Datu two years ago.

Nurul Izzah confirmed in a statement that the meeting did indeed happen on November 9 in the Philippines for a meeting with Filipino delegates, but stressed that the guest list was decided by the hosts.

Nurul Izzah said she had during the meeting stressed PKR’s “support for Malaysian government initiatives in peace negotiations in southern Philippines”, before going on to affirm Sabah’s place in the Malaysian federation.

On February 2013, over 200 Sulu gunmen stormed Lahad Datu in Sabah to stake the sultanate’s claim over the east Malaysian state.

In the bloody standoff that ensued with Malaysia’s security forces, a total of 68 terrorists were reportedly shot dead while 10 local policemen were killed.

A total of 173 arrests were made and 30, consisting of 27 Filipinos and three local residents, are being tried for terrorism-related charges.
