KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 15 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak reaffirmed today Malaysia’s commitment to fighting terrorism, in the wake of the series of attacks at several locations in Paris, France, on Friday.
The prime minister, who is currently attending the Group of Twenty (G20) Summit in Antalya, Turkey, said on social media that one of the topics discussed during the meet was terrorism and violent extremism.
“We must enhance our cooperation to combat this,” he wrote in one posting on microblogging site Twitter.
“Malaysia stands firmly w/ other countries in nt only condemning bt taking action to eradicate n prevent these atrocious acts of terror,” he added.
Yesterday, Najib took to his Twitter page to condemn the Paris attacks and express Malaysia’s solidarity with the people of France.
“Msia condemns the outrageous attacks in Paris today on innocent civilians. Our thoughts & prayers r w/ the ppl of France,” he tweeted under his personal account @NajibRazak, tagging French President Francois Hollande too, with his twitter handle @fhollande.
“I am shocked with what happened in Paris but we must remain united and undeterred in the war against terrorism,” he added.
According to French prosecutors in reports earlier today, three coordinated teams of gunmen and suicide bombers carried out the series of attacks across several venues in Paris — restaurants, a concert hall and the national football stadium — on Friday, causing hurt to hundreds and killing at least 129 people.
French President Hollande described the attacks as an “act of war” by IS and immediately declared a state of emergency.
Yesterday, the IS claimed responsibility for the attacks and said, according to Reuters, that it had sent its militants, some brandishing bombing belts and others, machine guns, to various locations across the French capital.
“To teach France, and all nations following its path, that they will remain at the top of Islamic State’s list of targets, and that the smell of death won’t leave their noses as long as they partake in their crusader campaign,” said the group, according to the international wire agency, referring to French air strikes on IS in Syria.
This afternoon, Najib’s deputy Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Malaysian authorities are on high alert and will ensure that the series of terror attacks in Paris will not take place here.
The deputy prime minister also said there are sufficient laws here to deal with those suspected of being involved in terrorist activities, such as the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012, the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) and the Penal Code.
“The counter-terrorism unit of the police force is being extra careful. We are ready to prevent this (Paris attacks) from happening here,” he told a news conference here.
“The police are not just ready, we are redoubling our efforts (as) next week Malaysia is the host for the Asean summit,” Ahmad Zahid added.
