BENTONG, Nov 13 ― The cabinet meeting today decided that the Works Ministry would be the only body permitted to issue any statement and latest development regarding the mudslide at Km 52.4 of the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Liow Tiong Lai said the decision was made to ensure no spreading of speculation or incorrect information by certain quarters over the incident.

A spokesperson, who will announce the latest development on the mudslide  including repair works and the opening of the highway, will be announced by Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

Liow, who is also Bentong member of Parliament, was speaking to reporters after checking the cleaning up works at the highway.

About 6.30pm on Wednesday, the landslide near Lentang-Bukit Tinggi had caused a mudflood of nearly 500 metres along the route.

Only three private vehicles and a transport lorry were stranded in the area.

Liow said he was concerned about the wellbeing of the residents affected by the mudslide.

“There are approximately 15 families in Lentang and another 15 Orang Asli families in Sungai Miak who are affected and they are all have been given supply of food and basis necessities, as well as temporary shelters,” he said.

The minister also thanked the Works Department for having stabilised the slopes along the old Bentong road.

“The road is now open to traffic during the day, but closed during the night for safety reason,” he added. ― Bernama
