KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 — Putrajaya will channel some RM40 billion into upgrading infrastructure with expanded bus, mass rapid transit (MRT) and light rail transit (LRT) lines as well as a traffic dispersal system for Jalan Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur, the prime minister said today in the tabling of Budget 2016.
Datuk Seri Najib Razak said that the LRT3 extension project will cost RM10 billion whereas the MRT II project will cost RM28 billion, with both projects expected to be completed by 2020 and 2022 respectively.
“LRT3 project from Bandar Utama, Damansara-Johan Seria, Klang with the estimated construction cost of RM10b will start in 2016, completed in 2020,” he tweeted as part of his tabling of the Budget 2016.
“MRT II SgBuloh-Serdang-Putrajy with an estimated construction cost of RM28b is expected to start in the second quarter, expected to be completed by 2022,” a second tweet read.
The Rapid KL bus transit system will also see a RM2.5 billion expansion both in Kuala Lumpur and in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
“Rapid Transit KL-Klang bus project with costs exceeding RM1.5b & Rapid Bus Kota Kinabalu costing almost RM1b will be carried out,” he also tweeted.
Najib also said that some RM900 million will be allocated for a Jalan Tun Razak Traffic Dispersal project which will be a “strategic public-private collaboration.”
According to Prasarana’s website, the Kelana Jaya line and the Ampang line will both see an addition of 13 and 12 stations respectively.
According to local newswire Bernama, the construction of MRT Line 1 started in August 2012 and it is expected to begin operations in July 2017, while Line 2 is still in the preliminary works and is expected to be operational in 2021.
