KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 — Parti Amanah Negara deputy president Salahuddin Ayub today called for a reform in parliamentary processes after accusing Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia of making decisions deemed favourable to those in Barisan Nasional (BN).

The former Kubang Kerian MP said these reforms should begin with the formation of a committee to review the House’s Standing Orders.

“It is important for the Standing Orders to be reviewed,” he told reporters at Amanah’s headquarters after announcing four new leaders in its Youth wing.

“The Standing Orders are what guides Parliament, and the Speaker cannot appear to be heavily on the government’s side,” he added.

He was responding to news of Pandikar throwing MPs Lim Lip Eng and Gobind Singh Deo out of Parliament this week, as well as threatening DAP leader Lim Kit Siang with a possible suspension.

“To me these actions are against the aspirations of the youth. The younger generation does not want to see this kind of Parliament anymore,” he said.

He added that Malaysia should take lessons from the UK’s House of Commons, which he said regularly reforms its processes to meet contemporary norms.

“If we want to see a world-class Parliament, I believe the Speaker also must also reform in his ideas in how he leads the Parliament. This is what we have suggested in the past and debated because these democratic spaces that steer Parliament require a lot of reforms,” he said.

Salahuddin later announced four new leaders in Amanah’s Youth wing: Wan Anwar Wan Ibrahim as Youth vice-chair for national and current affairs, Azan Safar as Youth vice-chair for community development, Khairol Najib Hashim as the leadership development director and Mohamad Ammar Atan as Khairol’s deputy.

Salahuddin added that he would be suggesting a vice-president seat on the party’s national leadership level be reserved for a youth representative.

Youth wing chief Sany Hamzan said the movement will set aside one of its vice-chair position for a non-Malay representative as part of the party’s effort to be inclusive.
