KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 — 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) expressed regret today that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had chosen again yesterday to rehash previously disproven accusations about the controversies surrounding its deals.

The state-owned firm said Dr Mahathir very quickly forgets facts, and offered to help the former prime minister by responding to his repeated allegations.

One example, the firm said in a statement, was Dr Mahathir’s claim in his latest blog post yesterday that “over RM20 billion cannot be traced or accounted for”.

“For Tun Mahathir’s benefit, a comprehensive breakdown of how 1MDB utilised its RM42 billion of debt — based on the company’s audited financial statements — can be found here,” it said, referring the former prime minister to a June 3 press release that detailed how it had used the funds it has been accused of squandering.

On 1MDB land, the firm said Dr Mahathir had forgotten that it is a 100 per cent government-owned entity, which meant that any increase in value of the land would directly and solely benefit the government.

“Apart from now quoting a much lower land value of RM3,000 per square foot (vs RM7,000 per square foot in a previous allegation by him), Tun Mahathir forgets to acknowledge that 1MDB has committed RM3 billion on infrastructure development in TRX.

“This equates to approximately RM1500 of infrastructure expenditure per square foot, paid for by 1MDB, and subsequently recovered through land sales,” 1MDB said.

The firm also reminded Dr Mahathir that the case of the mysterious RM2.6 billion donation found in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s accounts had been cleared up by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission on August 3.

The agency, it pointed out, had revealed that the funds originated from a private donor and did not come from 1MDB.

“1MDB regrets that Tun Mahathir keeps forgetting the facts, not just from 1MDB but from independent and respected agencies such as the MACC.

“Nevertheless, 1MDB is committed to continue providing responses in order to help Tun, a veteran former politician, remember our fact-based answers,” 1MDB said.

Dr Mahathir had taken to his blog again yesterday to write about the 1MDB controversy and demand Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s resignation.

In the post, the former prime minister called 1MDB a “totally unnecessary fund” and claimed that the firm, after an RM1 million capital injection from the government, had borrowed a massive sum of RM42 billion from the market.

Of these borrowings, he said the only assets the firm now has are its power plants, which he said were purchased at higher than market prices, and its lands.

“More than RM20 Billion of the 42 billion Ringgit cannot be traced or accounted for,” he alleged.

Dr Mahathir has been unabashedly campaigning for Najib’s early resignation from the government, claiming that the leader, with controversies like the 1MDB financial scandal plaguing his leadership, could cause Barisan Nasional to lose Putrajaya in the next polls.
