Death of Morais puts off doctor’s case

SHAH ALAM, Sept 19 — The case of army pathologist, Col Dr R. Kunaseegaran, charged with trading while being a civil servant, has been set for October 19 following the death of Anthony Kevin Morais, the deputy public prosecutor in the matter.

Sessions Court judge Sabariah Atan set the new date after Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission deputy public prosecutor Mohammed Heikal Ismail, requested for time to study the case.

Lawyers Afifuddin Hafifi and Mohd Shafiq Ahmed Bazari, representing  Dr Kunaseegaran, did not object.

Dr Kunaseegaran, head of the pathologist laboratory at the Tuanku Mizan Military Hospital in Wangsa Maju, was not present in court.

He faces two charges of unlawfully engaging in trade while serving as a civil servant in his capacity as the pathology expert at the hospital. The offence was allegedly committed at Clinipath (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd at 23, Galeri Empire, Jalan Empayar, off Persiaran Sultan Ibrahim KU1, Klang, from April 9, 2010 to April 8, 2011 and from April 9, 2011 to December 31, 2011.

Dr Kunaseegaran, 52, had claimed trial to both charges under Section 168 of the Penal Code, which carries imprisonment of up to a year or a  fine, or both.

The second charge involved unlawfully engaging in trade while serving as a civil servant at Genomed Sdn Bhd, Third Floor, Galeri Empire, Jalan Empayar off Persiaran Sultan Ibrahim KU1, Klang, on January 1, 2012.
