KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 — Police-report-aficionado Abdul Rani Kulup urged the police today to take action against Otai Reformis, accusing the NGO of causing the ruckus at Petaling Street that saw protesters being sprayed with water cannons during the #Merah169 rally.

Speaking to reporters outside the Dang Wangi police station here after lodging a report, Abdul Rani cited a statement made by Otai Reformis secretary Abdul Razak Ismail in a recent video, who had allegedly vowed to defend Chinese traders in Petaling Street from the Malay protesters clad in red shirts at the demonstration yesterday.

“I want the police to investigate this Otai Reformis secretary, ask him why he said that. The law would depend on them (the police). When you said something like this, you are bound to upset people,” said Abdul Rani, who is Martabat Jalinan Muhibbah Malaysia (MJMM) president.

When asked if he meant that it was Abdul Razak’s statement that had caused the clash between protestors and the authorities at Petaling Street in the city centre here yesterday, he said: “Yes.”

However, Abdul Rani could not specify which date or event when the Otai Reformis secretary had purportedly made the remark.

Several protesters at the pro-Malay demonstration yesterday, dubbed “Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu” [United People’s Rally] and alternatively called “Himpunan Maruah Melayu” [Malay Dignity Rally], had attempted to go through the police barricade at Petaling Street, prompting the police to fire water cannons on the crowd.
