Five military personnel among eight charged with terrorism-related offences

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 — Five military personnel, including two commandos, were among eight individuals charged with various offences related to terrorism at the Magistrate’s Court in six states today.

However, no plea was recorded.

At the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court, Zakariya Ahmad, 27, a Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) personnel in Lumut was charged with possessing a mobile phone that contained images related to the co-called IS militant group.

He was charged with committing the offence at a waiting room of the Bukit Aman Police headquarters at 9.05am on Aug 19.

In JOHOR, two commandos from 21 Commando Regiment of Sungai Udang Camp, Melaka were charged at the Magistrate’s Court in Kota Tinggi with promoting membership in the IS group in August last year.

The accused, Mohd Zuraidi Shafiq Zulkeflee, 27, and Muhammad Adibzakir Zahri, 28, were alleged to have committed the offence at Markas 21 Gerup Gerak Khas, Iskandar Camp, near Mersing in August 2014.

In PERLIS, x-ray technician Ahmad Kamil Ghazali and interior designer, Azlee Md Salleh were charged with possession of materials related to the IS group.

Ahmad Kamil was charged with possessing ten issues of the Dabiq magazine, which was closely related to the IS group, and the offence was allegedly committed at at about 7.50 am in front of the Taman Kechor Administrative Complex on Aug 19, while Azlee was charged with possessing a handphone containing pictures of IS militants.

In PERAK, a soldier who is a member of the Border Regiment at Bukit Kayu Hitam Camp, Kedah, was charged with the possession of printed materials on terrorism.

Among the materials were books titled ‘Daulatul Islam Baaqiyah’, ‘Tentera Fisabilliah (bangkitlah wahai umat Islam)’, ‘Bendera Hitam Lailahaillah End The Word Of Allah Is The Highest’, ‘Ajnad As-Syams’ and Keep Calm and Support Jihad.

Private Mohammad Rosdan Mohammad Khir, 24, allegedly committed the offence at the Gerik Police Station at about 10.20 am on Aug 19.

In NEGERI SEMBILAN, Corporal Mohd Azidi Said, 28 was charged at the Port Dickson Magistrate’s Court with possession of a mobile telephone containing the image of the IS flag.

The offence was allegedly committed at the Port Dickson district police headquarters here at about 10.05 am, also on Aug 19.

In KEDAH, a statistics officer Poziah Harun, 42, was charged with harbouring a person who had committed terrorist act, last year.

The woman was charged with harbouring Zulkarnain Ghaz Abd Ghani at Poliklinik Azhar & Rakan-Rakan at Jalan Masjid, Taman Pekan Baru Sungai Petani between September and December 2014.

For possession of publications, all the accused were charged under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code which carries an imprisonment for up to seven years or fine, if found guilty.

For promoting membership in terrorist group, the accused was charged under Section 130G(b) of the Penal Code which provides a maximum jail term of 30 years and a fine upon conviction.

For harbouring a person who has committed a terrorist act, the charge comes under Section 130K(a) of the Penal Code, which carries an imprisonment for life and also liable to fine, if convicted. — Bernama
