KOTA TINGGI, Sept 13 — A total of 9,391 warning letters have been issued within a week (until Sept 8) after waste separation at source was implemented officially on Sept 1.

Housing and Local Government deputy minister, Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique said the warning letters were issued after inspecting 1.4 million premises in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Pahang, Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah and Perlis.

She said that although the separation of waste began early this month, checks on premises found there were still people who found it difficult to accustom themselves with it and there were those who were confused about how to go about it.

“Separation of solid waste can be done in any kind of plastic bag no matter the colour, as long as it is isolated and put out to be collected by the concessionaire.

“If you do not want the waste to be collected by the concessionaire, it can be sold and the money used as savings for children’s activities,” she told reporters after a working visit to Kampung Lukut and Kampung Sepak Hilir, Kota Tinggi here yesterday.

Halimah, who is also the member of Parliament for Tenggara, said the given time period to help people adapt was until June 1, 2016, after which they will be issued fined if not following the new regulation.

Meanwhile, an allocation of RM1.52 million was channelled for the implementation of the waste separation project as well as to upgrade living facilities of Kampung Lukut and Kampung Sepak Hilir residents here.— Bernama
