Policeman severely injured, pistol stolen after attack by foreign workers in Penang

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Sept 7 — A police corporal sustained severe injuries after being beaten by a group of foreign workers in the compound of a chicken feed processing factory in Bukit Tengah here yesterday. 

Seberang Perai Tengah District Police chief ACP Rusli Mohd Noor said the 56-year-old policeman was carrying out intelligence work at the factory when the mishap occurred at 6pm.

“The foreign workers also took the policeman’s Walther pistol and 13 bullets before they fled the scene,” Rusli told Bernama here today.

He said the policeman, however, managed to call his friend before he was found in a state of semi-conscious by a member of Police Motorcycle Patrol Unit and taken to Bukit Mertajam Hospital where he received five stitches on the forehead and diagnosed with a broken rib and bruises all over the face and body.

Rusli said police had arrested 18 Nepali men and four women of Vietnam and Indonesian nationals in connection with the incident.

“Police had also found the policeman’s pistol in a nearby bush,” he said, adding that police were tracking down several other foreign nationals to facilitate further investigation into the case. — Bernama
