KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 — An artist was arrested in a raid in Subang Jaya today on suspicion running a site selling pornographic images that had Islamic elements, according to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

The suspect was caught in a joint raid by the commission and the police, after they tracked down the individual via an app used to upload the images onto the website.

“Investigations found that the suspect likely drew the pornographic animations and sold them to buyers especially school students for as low as RM2,” MCMC monitoring and enforcement division chief Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin said in a statement.

He described the content as depicting Muslimah or female Muslims in lewd “hentai”-style drawings — the Japanese term for pornographic comics or animation.

Among the items seized in the raid include a mobile phone and SIM card, a flash drive, external hard drive, a laptop, desktop computer and modem. The authorities also took the suspect’s statement.

The suspect is expected to be charged under Section 233 (2) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a fine of no more than RM50,000 or a maximum of one year in jail, and Section 292 of the Penal Code which carries a penalty of no more than three years’ jail, a fine or both.

“The public is encouraged to always practice self-regulation when using internet applications. Use the internet wisely and not to carry out negative activities,” Zulkarnain said.
