KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31 — The daughter of Hijjas Kasturi, a prominent architect, has been arrested for distributing Bersih 4 balloons at an upscale shopping mall here earlier today.

It is understood that Bilqis Hijjas is currently detained at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters after the police picked her up earlier from the Pavilion shopping mall in Bukit Bintang.

Bilqis’ friend, Syar S Alias, told Malay Mail Online that they are now waiting at the police station with her family but are uncertain as to whether or not Bilqis will be charged.

“Over the weekend we had distributed the balloons but today she was distributing it at Pavilion, where the DiverseCity was,” Syar said when contacted, referring to an international art festival currently taking place at the mall.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was scheduled to attend the programme today.

Syar said the balloons had four of Bersih 4 demands written on it. The Bersih 4 rally took place over the weekend with some estimates putting the turnout to as high as 100,000 people.

The protest demanded Putrajaya to institute key reforms – fair elections, free media, better economy and the right to assemble.

The police were not available for comment on Bilqis detention at the time of writing.
