KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31— Police have denied rumours that Bersih 2.0 chief Maria Chin Abdullah was arrested after the Bersih 4 rally ended last night.

There were claims that she was arrested at about 12.40am this morning to facilitate investigations, according to The Star Online.

City police chief Comm Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa was quoted saying that such claims were irresponsible and baseless.

“We did not arrest Maria. I don’t know where they got their details from,” he reportedly said.

Tajuddin said Malaysians should refrain from circulating unverified reports to avoid provocation.

“Please do not spread lies. We don’t want any untoward incident(s) to happen. Be responsible in what you share on the Internet,” he added.

Bersih 2.0 steering committee member Dr Wong Chin Huat also confirmed that Chin was not arrested by the police, in a Facebook posting a few hours ago.

“Maria Chin Abdullah is safe. She was escorted away, not arrested.

We will have a lengthy battle to fight but for now we can have some rest,” he wrote.

The 34-hour long Bersih 4 rally saw tens of thousands gather at the fringes of Dataran Merdeka throughout the weekend while hundreds remained to sleep on the streets on Saturday night.

The rally ended peacefully albeit previous threats by Putrajaya of a crackdown after declaring the rally and its paraphernalia illegal.
