KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 — The Sultan of Johor warned politicians today against intervening with the affairs of the royal house, or make any statements involving the palace.
In a report carried by English daily The Star, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar said his warning was meant to be taken as an advice to certain politicians who have issued arrogant-sounding statements.
“This is a warning to all politicians and among them, the Kempas assemblyman,” he said, referring to Umno’s Datuk Tengku Putra Harun Tengku Jumat.
Tengku Putra had on Tuesday warned politicians against dragging state muftis and sultans into politics, and warned against asking the palace to interfere in politics.
“There are even those who said they want to whack my son. Are these the leaders that we should respect?” he asked.
Umno minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz had in June chided Johor’s crown prince Tunku Ismail Ibrahim, saying that his royal position will not save him from the law should he interfere in the government’s business.
The comment was in response to what the 30-year-old royal had said about the cancelled public forum where Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was to explain the government’s controversial actions on 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
This led to a public spat between the two in the media that was heavily publicised in the media, leading to an announcement by the police later that Nazri would be investigated for inciting public mischief under the Penal Code.
