KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — DAP’s Lim Kit Siang urged political leaders today to discuss Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s proposal that the opposition support a vote of no-confidence against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, but retain Barisan Nasional (BN) in power.

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir wrote on his blog yesterday that there are a number of Umno MPs who would like to see Najib ousted, but that since they will not like to bring down a BN government, the opposition can only compel Najib from office if they were willing to have another leader from the ruling coalition take over.

“It is an interesting proposition which political leaders can meet and discuss to see how far it could advance the cause of ‘Save Malaysia’,” Lim said in a statement.

The DAP parliamentary leader pointed out that he has previously mooted a bipartisan coalition back in March to “save Malaysia” and to protect the Federal Constitution and rule of law.

“I has asked at the time whether this idea of a post-BN, post-PR ‘Save Malaysia’ grand coalition, going beyond the existing political coalitions and parties, was a practical and achievable concept?

“It was undoubtedly the greatest challenge facing Malaysians and only time would tell whether it is feasible or not,” said the Gelang Patah MP.

Earlier today, PKR lawmaker Rafizi Ramli urged 25 MPs from the ruling coalition to join hands with the opposition to form the majority in a vote of no-confidence against Najib.
