KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has provisions to deal with those who interfere with its work and should not wait to use it, DAP MP Gobind Singh Deo said today.

The opposition lawmaker questioned the seriousness of the MACC in handling investigations relating to the controversial RM2.6 billion donation transferred into Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s personal bank accounts.

“[The MACC] has wide powers, including powers of arrest and detention for the purposes of investigations. There are also provisions in place for the MACC to deal with those who interfere with its work,” Gobind said  in a statement.

He said the MACC must not betray the trust placed in them by Parliament and that investigations must be done effectively without fear or favour.

“As Member of Parliament, I demand that they now walk the talk. They must demonstrate that they are fair in their dealings with everyone and that they do not practice double standards,” he said.

Gobind who is also a lawyer pointed out that the MACC had acted immediately in questioning the late DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock over a sum of RM2,400 allegedly missing over the purchase of some flags.

The Puchong MP had represented the Teoh family after Beng Hock died in MACC custody in July 2009.

“So what are they waiting for now that they have confirmed that they will question the Prime Minister over the so called RM2.6 billion in his account?” he asked.

Investigations by MACC into the 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal and the RM2.6 billion transferred into Najib’s account have been disrupted by a series of interrogations and raids on the commission by the police.

The police are currently investigating MACC for alleged information leaks regarding its investigations of the scandal to news sources.

Even so, MACC announced yesterday that it would be interrogating Najib about the donation that is claimed to be from a Middle Eastern donor who have since been contacted by MACC.
