KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 — A member of the Terengganu royal family has quit PAS, claiming to be fed-up with the fighting within the Islamist party and with its opposition allies.

Tengku Sri Paduka Raja Tengku Ibrahim Ismail, who is the uncle of Terengganu’s Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, had joined PAS three years ago called it quits yesterday, The Star daily reported.

“The ideology of the political parties in Malaysia, especially PAS’, has strayed,” he was quoted telling reporters at his home in Batu Buruk, Kuala Terengganu.

“At a time when Umno and other political parties are not doing well, PAS has failed to capitalise on the situation and seize the opportunity to strengthen the party.”

The royal also accused PAS of being “immature” with its insistence to stand alone, after the break-up of Pakatan Rakyat (PR).

“I believe the top leadership in PAS has lost its direction and the determination to strengthen the party, especially after the latest rift between the ulama and the professionals,” he was quoted said, using the Arabic word that describes the clergy class.

Despite that, he did not say whether he will join any other party yet, even the upcoming one by PAS’ progressive splinter movement Harapan Baru.

On June 6, PAS passed a motion in its annual congress, or muktamar, proposing to sever ties with DAP while still remaining in PR with PKR, following the parties’ fallout over key ideological issues like hudud.

The decision, immediately led to the DAP declaring the death of PR, with PKR following suit.

PAS has said it will not join any opposition pact with DAP in it.
