KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin may be referred to the party’s disciplinary committee for claiming in a recently leaked video that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had admitted to receiving RM2.6 billion in his personal account, party supreme council member Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said today.
Although he did not provide proof, Aziz alleged the leaking of the video appeared to have beeen staged to discredit Najib, which he sai can be interpreted as an act of betrayal.
He also said the act of sharing unverified information with “opposition leaders” like former Umno minister Tan Sri Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir, was a breach of party discipline.
“Yes we may refer him to the disciplinary committee because of the leaked video… in the video it was clear he was not honest about his assertion to back the PM.
“He shared unverified information with opposition leaders.. it was as if the video was staged,” Aziz told reporters after opening the Lembah Pantai Umno wings divisional meetings here.
Rumours of the axe on Muhyiddin had been swirling in the political blogsphere in recent days and increased after last Satursay when the Umno veteran urged Najib to explain fully the “real facts” surrounding 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), claiming few ministers to be fully apprised of the state investor.
This resulted in a rare public rebuke from the Prime Minister’s Office, which urged Muhyiddin and other members of the administration not to pre-judge the ongoing investigations on 1MDB.
A video recording was then leaked Wednesday showing Muhyiddin claiming to guests at his Damansara Heights house that he had confronted Najib about a RM2.6 billion injection into the latter’s personal bank accounts from a Middle East source.
Umno leaders loyal to Najib claimed the video was intentionally leaked as a part of Muhyiddin’s retaliation against his boss but the former deputy prime minister had said that despite his axing, he would not do anything to destabilise the party and would
remain loyal to the president.
His successor Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also claimed that Muhyiddin had pledged to remain loyal to Najib when the two spoke on the phone two days ago.
Zahid yesterday dismissed calls for the authorities to investigate Muhyiddin’s claim that Najib had admitted to receiving the money, saying the assertion was merely made by an “angry” man.
Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar also said his men will not investigate the claims as he saw no criminal element in the allegation.
