KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 — Malaysia Airlines (MAS) today urged against early conclusions that a piece of plane debris discovered on an island in the Indian Ocean was from missing Flight MH370.

News of the discovery this morning has sparked a frenzy of reports suggesting the item was from the plane that vanished on March 8 last year with 239 people on board.

“With regards to the reports of the discovery of an aircraft flaperon at Reunion Island, Malaysia Airlines is working with the relevant authorities to confirm the matter.

“At the moment, it would be too premature for the airline to speculate the origin of the flaperon,” the flag carrier said in a statement today.

French aviation authorities are currently examining the retrieved debris, while Malaysia has also dispatched a team to the location.

Reunion is a French island located between Madagascar and Mauritius, which Australian search authorities said was consistent with projections of the missing plane’s location.
