KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 — Rumours that police are investigating Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz for allegedly being involved in a plot to topple the prime minister is untrue, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said today.

Two days ago, the Internet was abuzz with speculation that Zeti and a few other BNM officials were investigated under Section 124 of the Penal Code in a supposed bid to sabotage the government’s special taskforce inquiry on the controversies surrounding Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) brainchild.

“No. She is not being investigated by us,” the Inspector-General of Police told reporters when asked for comment.

When asked to state clearly if the police denies investigating Zeti, Khalid said “yes”.

It is unclear where the rumours originated, but international news agency Reuters said the rumours of Zeti’s resignation had been circulating in local media and financial markets.

Several local blogs ran the rumours, which subsequently spread on Facebook and Twitter.

According to the blogs, in addition to the Section 124 investigation, a parallel corruption investigation will also be held implicating Zeti in a deal that involves Datuk Tawfiq Ayman and Alif Ayman.

Tawfiq Ayman is Zeti’s husband.

“The investigation is two-fold but will probe those involved in the direct negotiation of water pump contracts whereby the Ministry of Education awarded lucrative water contracts to the a company that has several directors who are related to the Tan Sri Dr Zeti,” one blog posting claimed.

The allegation coincided with the controversial removal of Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail as Attorney-General earlier this week.

Abdul Gani was one of the government officials in a four-agency task force set up to investigate the 1MDB financial saga.

Officials from BNM, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the police round up the composition of the special task force.

Government critics believe Abdul Gani’s removal, along with the culling of a few senior Cabinet ministers critical of the government’s handling of 1MDB, was aimed at sabotaging the investigation process.

Putrajaya, however, said Abdul Gani was replaced due to health reasons while Najib said the Cabinet reshuffle was necessary for a united government.
