KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail today expressed ignorance over the announcement that his service as Attorney-General has been discontinued due to health reasons.

When contacted by Malay Mail Online, Gani only said that he was not aware of the decision that was conveyed by Chief Secretary Tan Sri Ali Hamsa this morning.

“I don’t know, OK? I don’t want to say a word right now,” he told Malay Mail Online when asked when the decision was made.

Ali Hamsa announced this morning that Abdul Gani’s tenure as A-G was discontinued yesterday owing to the latter’s “health”.

Abdul Gani, however, will continue to serve as a judicial and legal services officer until October 6 this year, when he reaches his compulsory retirement age.

“Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail has contributed greatly to the country over the time he has held the post of Attorney-General,” Ali Hamsa said in a statement.

“On behalf of the government I extend the highest appreciation and thanks over his service and hope he will he gains the best of health,” he added.

As Attorney-General, Abdul Gani had been heading the multi-agency special taskforce that is investigating 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

He was appointed as Attorney-General in 2002.

Prior to his appointment, Abdul Gani had risen to prominence as the lead prosecutor in the first sodomy trial of former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
