KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — Kelantan PAS’s party wings have urged its national leadership to punish those involved in Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB), a new movement formed among the Islamist party’s ousted progressives that intends to register as a political party this September.
The wings demanded that PAS’s leadership start a disciplinary proceeding against those involved in the splinter group’s formation and in actions that they said has only done “disservice” to the party, including allegedly undermining PAS in public rallies.
“It is our stand that a disciplinary action must be taken to ensure the party’s integrity and stability from being threatened by those claiming to be GHB supporters,” said the wings in a joint statement.
The statement was signed by the Kelantan chapter’s Ulama Wing chief Datuk Hassan Mahmood, Muslimat chief Siti Zailah Yusof, Youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, and non-Muslim wing Supporters’ Congress chief Lim Guan Seng.
PAS deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man had already said last week that no action will be taken against those involved in the budding new movement just yet, although they plan to form a new party later this year.
During PAS’s elections early last month month, the ulama trounced party progressives in a takeover of PAS, causing the ousted faction to form GHB led by former deputy president Mohamad Sabu.
GHB has since announced it will register the new party on September 14 to replace PAS in a new federal opposition pact.
The PAS Ulama Wing has since warned its members to not be enticed by “satanic” invitations from the party’s ousted progressives to join their budding GHB, claiming the movement is fuelled by “resentment”.
