KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — DAP lawmaker Tony Pua urged today the government make public the Auditor General’s (A-G) preliminary findings on its investigation of debt-riddled 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), saying the report can help allay growing concerns about the authenticity of documents about the state investor.
The Petaling Jaya Utara MP said A-G Tan Sri Ambrin Buang’s report had “comprehensively” addressed the issue surrounding the controversial purported leaks of 1MDB documents.
“Based on the information which is provided in the report, all questions of whether or not the documents published by Sarawak Report were tampered with has been addressed in the report,” he told a news conference here.
He added that by releasing the preliminary report, “there will be no more need for Lester Melanyi’s paid video confessions. There will be no more need for countless unsubstantiated allegations and insinuations”.
The converse is also true, Pua said, adding that attempts to conceal information would only fan more rumours.
He noted that the 1MDB issue has now spiralled out of control with both the ruling Barisan Nasional and the opposition hurling wild accusations against each other over the 1MDB issue, such as the claim of a conspiracy to topple Najib.
Pua is a member of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that is also conducting its own inquiry into 1MDB, but said he cannot divulge details of the report as he has been sworn to confidentiality.
The interim report was submitted to PAC earlier this month.
Pua noted that it was difficult to sift through conflicting news reports on former PetroSaudi International (PSI) executive Xavier Justo's statement about the 1MDB documents.
The DAP man said state-linked media would report Justo or the Thai police who arrested the Swiss national saying the papers had been doctored, but without providing any quote to support their reports.
Pua also pointed out that BN leaders like Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi were quick to cite Justo's arrest as proof that the documents had been tempered when the Thai police themselves had confirmed that the former PSI executive “didn't make any changes to the documents and sent the original documents (to the buyer) as original copies”.
“The entire farcical 1MDB circus has reached the heights of international scorn and derision for Malaysia.
“Our country's reputation has been torn to shreds with the sheer volume of information and misinformation which has made a complete mockery of our governance system, transparency and accountability,” Pua said, and reiterated today that he had never met Justo.
Government leaders have claimed following Justo's arrest in Bangkok two months ago that there is a conspiracy to use the 1MDB scandal to topple the BN administration through undemocratic means, a claim that is now subject to police investigation.
The government have also used the video confession of Lester, a former Sarawak Tribune editor, to reinforce their claims that there exist an opposition-driven conspiracy to unseat Najib.
Opposition MPs have panned Lester’s statements, and questioned the ex-journalist’s credibility.
Among the most vocal critic of the 1MDB saga, Pua has been implicated in the conspiracy and is likely under police investigation.
He has since found out that he is barred from leaving the country but said he will challenge the travel blacklist.
