KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 — Business at electronic goods mall Low Yat Plaza was back to normal yesterday, but shop owners were still worried about their safety.

Nur Ezatul Nabila Azhar, 20, a laptop salesgirl said she was afraid to go to work since the mob violence last weekend.

“I was not afraid of going to work until the incident happened over the weekend. I am thankful that I was not there to witness it,” she said.

Nabila said that she hoped the management would beef up security to avoid any more incidents.

Rioting occurred on Saturday and Sunday after a large crowd gathered to protest the alleged assault of a youth by shop operators on Saturday.

The youth who ran off with a Lenovo S860 phone worth RM799, was caught and assaulted before being handed over to the police.

It is believed the suspect’s accomplice, who was released, instigated his friends to take revenge.

They barged into the electronic goods mall and attacked the store where their friend was detained.

Another salesgirl who requested anonymity, said she had seen police personnel at the mall’s entrance.

“I feel safe as the police are here monitoring the situation but I am still traumatised by the experience,” she said.

“My boss told us not to come to work on Monday for fear of another attack,” she said.

The salesgirl claimed 90 per cent of shops in Low Yat Plaza were closed on Monday.

However, shoppers at Low Yat Plaza were unfazed by the incident and have returned to the mall.

Raymond Lim, a 55 year-old sales manager, said there was no need to panic because the authorities had taken charge of the situation.

“I believe they are handling the situation. It is just another day for me, I am not afraid as the problem was due to miscommunication and rumours,” he added.

“Rioting is rare in Malaysia. People will forget about it and life goes back to normal,” Lim said.

Student, Abdul Muin Mukhni, 24, said he often visited Low Yat Plaza because of the many handphone accessories outlets.

He added Low Yat Plaza had increased security as there were more guards since the incident.

“There is nothing to be afraid of, I believe the management has enough security measures in place in case of an emergency,” he said.

A spokesman from the management office said it has added 15 security guards.
