KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — Controversial blogger Papagomo and several others have yet to surrender themselves to the police, who are probing claims of unverified information spread online linked to Sunday’s bloody brawl at Low Yat Plaza, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said today.
The IGP confirmed that none of the suspects that they told to come forward have done so.
“Today we will look for them,” he said at a news conference here.
“Those who were so excited to incite acts of rioting and such... be ready,” Khalid added.
Yesterday, the IGP said Papagomo, whose real name is Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, will be hauled up along several others identified by the police for spreading malicious talk online linked to Sunday’s riot.
Khalid promised “immediate action” on those identified, though he did not specify what were the contents shared by Papagomo on the Low Yat fracas that had landed him in trouble.
Khalid today reminded the public against spreading such rumours, saying that it would only make things worse than they already are.
“There are still those who are abusing social media, taking pictures from other incidents (and linking it to Low Yat)... don’t fan the fire,” he said, adding that police are tracking every single malicious post they come across.
A riot broke out Sunday night at Low Yat Plaza that left five people injured, including several journalists.
Police have since detained 18 other people believed involved in the melee.
The riot reportedly started after a 22-year-old man was handed over on Friday to the police for allegedly stealing a phone from a store at the popular tech mall.
The IGP yesterday said the man’s friend who was also nabbed but later released had contacted their other friends and the group had returned to the mobile phone store, assaulted its workers and caused some RM70,000 worth of damages.
Rumours swirled on social media after the alleged theft that the Chinese trader had sold the Malay man a counterfeit phone, leading to calls for boycotts of “cheating” Chinese traders and the complex.
The incident then led to a mob descending on the mall Sunday night.
