KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 — MIC nominations for branch level re-elections went on smoothly in 25 zones nationwide.
The three-day re-elections, which ended yesterday, were conducted by the 2009 interim Central Working Committee (CWC), headed by acting president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam.
Three positions were contested.
MIC vice-president Datuk M. Saravanan said the re-elections, held in compliance with a Registrar of Societies (RoS) directive, did not meet with any problems by the nominees or their supporters.
“All went well for the past three days,” he said.
“We were prepared for any eventualities but there were no untoward incidents.”
Saravanan said those who did not file their nominations were waiting for the court’s verdict today.
“We don’t blame them. Let them be fencesitters, they need to be sure of what is legitimate or not before they take action on behalf of their branch,” he said.
A total of 3,195 out of 3,900 MIC branches were approved by the RoS to hold fresh elections.
The polling for branch re-elections was set for July 20 to 26.
Despite a court order on Thursday that Datuk Seri G. Palanivel should not carry out activities in the capacity of MIC president, a member of Palanivel’s faction, L. Sivasubramaniam, said 2,238 branches had filed their nomination papers for branch elections organised by the group.
