BANGI, July 10 — A coalition of establishment-friendly Malay non-governmental organisations (NGOs) today voiced their willingness to work with the Opposition and other stakeholders who like the group, have been campaigning to urge Putrajaya to exit from the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), which is yet to be finalised.
Islamist group Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) deputy president Aminuddin Yahaya said that the gravity of the matter, which if not addressed might result in the country being controlled by ‘American-Jews’, needs the collaboration of everyone from the community, regardless of political leanings.
“TPPA is not an issue about BN (Barisan Nasional) or the Opposition. This is an issue regarding the country’s sovereignty and it transcends political believes and issues.
“We will work with anyone in this, be it the Opposition or otherwise, because this agreement is not going to affect a particular group or community but all of us,” he added.
Perkasa secretary general Syed Hassan Syed Ali told the same news conference that government policies in the last six years have done more harm than good and demanded the BN federal government come clean on the contents of its agreement with the US.
“This country is not owned by ministers or the leadership that is. This is our country and they cannot make haphazard decisions which may result in the country being pawned off,” he said.
“So, there must be transparency. What is the exact TPPA provision that the government intends to implement?” he asked, urging Putrajaya to call off its negotiations without much ado.
Syed Ali also said he was not convinced with the assurance given by International Trade and Industry Minister (Miti) Datuk Seri Mutapa Mohamed’s assurance that Bumiputera and Malay rights will be protected because of the lack of explicit details.
He voiced concern over the speed at which US president Barack Obama was given the green light by his country’s senate to close the TPPA despite strong objections in his own Democratic Party.
“This development should already ring the alarm for our government to not sign the TPPA agreement,” the NGOs jointly said in a statement issued later.
They also alleged that the TPPA agreement is aimed at “Americanising” the Malaysian identity.
According to the NGOs, once the TPPA takes effect, much will be compromised, including issues concerning Muslims such as halal labels.
They claimed pornography would enter Malaysia freely as film censorship will no longer be enforced since it would be considered an obstruction to the non-taxable borderless trade principle.
“TPPA is in essence a project by giant American-Jew multinational companies who have the US in their control to reap profits in folds without caring about the plight of their countrymen,” the NGOs claimed.
The TPPA is a free trade agreement that has been negotiated by the US, Malaysia and nine other nations as part of the larger Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership since 2010.
Critics continue to criticise the secrecy with which the deal is being negotiated, claiming that it would undermine the sovereignty of signatory nations and make drugs more expensive in member countries, among other things.
Although initially only suspicions, these fears and more were later confirmed by chapters of the TPPA that were leaked by whistleblower group WikiLeaks.
