SINGAPORE, June 30 — Two Malaysians, a 41 year-old man and a 34 year-old woman, were arrested for failing to stop for immigration clearance at the Woodlands Checkpoint in separate incidents on two consecutive days.

In a statement, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said in the first case yesterday, a Singapore-registered car (dark grey Mercedes Compressor) driven by the man who is also a Singapore Permanent Resident arrived at the Woodlands Checkpoint at about 3.50am.

He, however drove past the immigration counter without stopping for clearance, forcing the ICA officer on duty to activate the alarm and the Arrival Car Zone was locked down immediately.

The car was found at the Arrival Car Zone within the checkpoint and the driver was placed under immediate arrest.

In the second case today at about 5.10am, another car (pink Perodua Axia) driven by a woman had failed to stop for immigration clearance.

The Malaysia-registered car was tailgating the car in front at the Woodlands Checkpoint, resulting in an ICA officer activating the alarm and the Arrival Car Zone was locked down immediately while the ICA officers intercepted the car.

When the officers requested for the driver to switch off the engine and to unlock the vehicle, the driver refused to comply.

Officers had to break both the front and rear passenger windows to escort the driver out of the vehicle.

The woman, who was in possession of an expired travel document, was placed under arrest.

The ICA warned that anyone who failed to stop for immigration clearance will be dealt with firmly according to the laws of the country. — Bernama
