Najib: No need for gay parades here

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 — Gay parades and events of such nature are unsuitable for moderate Muslim Malaysia, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today.

The prime minister explained that Islam in the country was incompatible with extremes, be they conservative or liberal.

“Islam is a religion that promotes peace. Islam does not promote violence and teaches us moderation. It is not extreme nor it is too open (sic).

“There is no need for events like a gay parade because it is too open,” he said during his speech at a breaking-of-fast event in Pulapol.

Najib also hinted in his speech that deviant cultures were slowly “creeping into” the Malaysian lives, but did not elaborate on what these involved.

Last Friday, the US Supreme Court ruled to legalise same-sex marriage throughout America, prompting discussions about whether Malaysia would follow suit.
