Penang DAP accuses state Umno of criminal intimidation, nuisance in flag burning complaint

GEORGE TOWN, June 24 ― Penang DAP Youth (Dapsy) lodged a police report today over the flag burning incident by Penang Umno members yesterday.

Penang Dapsy assistant secretary Satees Muniandy lodged a police report at the Northeast District police headquarters at about 10.30am today.

“We want the police to investigate the Penang Umno members for their actions tomorrow under Section 503 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, Section 268 for public nuisance and Section 285 for negligent act in using fire that could endanger human life,” he told a press conference after lodging the police report.

He said what the group did in burning the flags at a public area threatens public safety.

“We also want the police to investigate the Penang Umno secretary Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir and the Penang Umno Youth chief Ratizal Abd Rahim who were leading the group yesterday,” he said.

In his report, he asked that police investigate if Umno members led by Musa and Rafizal were also the ones responsible for the four vandalism acts against DAP offices over the weekend.

“We are not accusing them, we only want the police to investigate if they are also the ones behind the vandalism acts because what they did yesterday showed as if there is a connection there,” he said.

Yesterday, Penang Umno handed over a memorandum to the Penang Island City Council (MBPP)  Mayor demanding for explanations on why the Umno signboard was removed even after they submitted an appeal to the council.

After handing over the memorandum, some of the members went to the ground floor of Komtar and set fire to two DAP flags.

Penang Dapsy deputy chief Chris Lee Chun Kit, who is also a MBPP councillor, condemned the act of burning DAP flags as an act of provocation.

“This is unruly and it has no place in our Malaysian society. It's time that this kind of retaliatory action stops,” he said in the press conference outside the district police headquarters.

He told the Umno members that any action taken by MBPP were in accordance to the law and that they must respect the rule of law.

“We only hope the police will take stern action against them for what they did and also to find those behind the vandalism acts against DAP premises,” he said.
