PETALING JAYA, June 13 — A businessman from India, allegedly robbed of 4.6kg of gold bars worth more than RM600,000 in Jalan Taiping, Taman Titiwangsa, on Thursday, was arrested soon after when police suspected something was not right.

Kuala Lumpur CID chief Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad said police were investigating if the 41-year-old, who had been buying gold bars here and taking them back to India over the last five months, was involved in smuggling.

“In one month, he does at least five to six transactions here and we need to find out if he does it legally,” he said.

Zainuddin said the man’s friend and his girlfriend had also been arrested to help in investigations.

He said the businessman was on his way to the airport with his four friends who were supposed to declare the gold bars on his behalf in Mumbai, India, when the robbery occurred.

“The incident happened after they drove 50 metres from the service residence where he lived whenever he was in Kuala Lumpur.

“A group of men in two cars blocked the businessman’s car from the front and back. Two men armed with parang from each car alighted and smashed the businessman’s car windscreen.”

Zainuddin said one of the robbers opened the car boot and took a bag containing the gold bars.

“The robbery was well-planned and executed swiftly. The robbers got into their vehicles and fled after grabbing the bag.”

The businessman and his friends immediately alerted the police and a CID team was despatched to the scene.

Zainuddin said the businessman bought the gold bars on Wednesday afternoon from a jeweller in Jalan Masjid India.

“He then bought a ticket to return to Mumbai and made arrangements with his friends to help him declare the gold bars there.”

Zainuddin said police were also investigating if the robbery was an inside job.
