KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 ― Husbands with fetishes for rough sex and nagging wives have been listed among the top reasons why marriages fail in Selangor, according to figures gathered by the Selangor Islamic Department (Jais).
Aluwi Parman, the chief registrar for the department's marriage, divorce and Islamic reference arm, said these were the two main reasons for the breakdown in marriages, which have increased in number year-on-year.
Selangor registered a total of 6,912 divorces last year, higher than the 6,162 who decided to end their marriages in 2013.
“It's is worrying that the number of divorce cases went up by 750 even after Jais has carried out various activities to raise awareness and knowledge on building a family to deal with this problem,” Aluwi was quoted as saying by Malay daily Harian Metro at an event yesterday.
Aluwi said nearly half of all divorce cases last year involved couples between the ages of 31 and 35, who accounted for 3,156 cases.
Aside from nagging and rough sex, other issues cited as major reasons for a breakup are finances, interference by outside parties and children, he added.
Aluwi, however, noted that part of the reason behind the spike in the number of divorces in the country's richest state is the increasing population density as Malaysians from all over the country converge in Selangor to earn a living.
The senior Jais official, meanwhile, said many Muslim men who intend to practice polygamy tend to solemnise their nuptials in either Indonesia or Thailand for expediency's sake.
“They think getting married overseas is easy and will solve problems in their relationship without realising that they will face problems registering their children with the National Registration Department in future,” he said.
Aluwi added that polygamists who marry overseas do so either because they are bent on practising polygamy, they got the woman pregnant or the affair did not get the family's blessings.
