Sabah quake: Hospital discharges last Singaporean student

KOTA KINABALU, June 8 — The Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu Hospital confirmed today that it has discharged the last of the Singaporean student climbers who were injured during the earthquake in Sabah last week.

According to a statement from the hospital, the student, an 11-year-old boy who is still reportedly in critical condition, was discharged this morning and sent back to Singapore.

Hospital chief executive officer Jean-Francois Naa said that the Tanjong Katong Primary School student was the last remaining patient admitted to the hospital and treated for serious head, chest and muscle injuries, and remains in a critical but stable condition in ICU.

“Our team of specialists, led by the Neurosurgeon and Paediatric Anaesthetist, have been closely discussing with the parents and relatives regarding his progress and best treatment options.

“Since the treatment is expected to take up to a few weeks, they have opted to continue the treatment in Singapore. This will make the care and support by the family much easier.

“After discussing with Singapore KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, we have mutually agreed this morning that the time is right to send the patient to Singapore for continued care,” he said in the statement.

The hospital received 20 patients since Friday morning’s 5.9 magnitude earthquake, of which two received outpatient treatment.

Another 13 were discharged on Saturday, four on Sunday and the last one this morning.

The hospital declined to reveal names of any of the patients but official lists yesterday stated that Prajesh Dhimant Patel, was being treated for serious injuries.

In total, the hospital has discharged 18 patients — all from Singapore — who were treated for varying degree of injuries following the earthquake.
