Mahfuz: Syura Council not likely to reverse PAS-DAP divorce decision

KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — Datuk Mahfuz Omar said today that it is unlikely that PAS’s highest decision-making body, the Syura Council, will undo the motion approved during the party’s muktamar last week to sever ties with the DAP.

Mahfuz, formerly the party’s information chief, pointed out that the council counts many from the Ulama wing as its members, and said if it decides to reverse the party’s decision, it would appear as though they were doing so to keep their members in their government positions.

“I don’t think what was said can be undone. That is difficult because the motion brought by the Dewan Ulama PAS during the muktamar, has outlined nine reasons regarding the need to sever political ties with DAP.

“So the nine reasons were seen as sufficient for them as it was passed during the Dewan Ulama Muktamar… and some of the Dewan Ulama committee members are the Syura council members,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby.

He stressed, however, that this was merely his opinion and does not represent the position of the party’s top leadership.

On Saturday, party secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali said the motion was not final as it still needs the advisory Syura Council’s endorsement, even though the muktamar has the authority to decide on party matters.

PAS had just earlier that day confirmed that it will sever ties with DAP while still remaining in Pakatan Rakyat with PKR.

Today, the Pokok Sena MP said if the Syura Council decides to undo the decision to sever ties with DAP, PAS’ image among the Muslim community who are the core of its support will be ruined.

“It will be seen that they want to sever ties, and then not.

“The people’s perception would seem like PAS prioritises positions and that will ruin PAS’ perception among the Muslims,” he said.
