KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — Another member of PAS’ progressive faction, Datuk Mujahid Yusof Rawa, today said he will resign from all his posts in the Penang government as a response to his party cutting ties with DAP.

Mujahid is the second PAS leader to do so, after defeated deputy president Mohamad Sabu said he was quitting all his posts in Penang in order to uphold the motion approved during the party’s muktamar last week.

“I am resigning with immediate effect from two positions in the PR state government that I had been appointed to in my capacity as a PAS leader,” he wrote in a Facebook post today.

“The posts are the directorships in the Penang Islam Foundation and the Penang International Islamic College of Technology Penang, which is under the purview of the Penang Islamic Council.”

He explained that the decision was made to fulfil the party’s decision to sever ties with DAP, saying the motion that was approved without debate meant PAS has lost confidence in DAP that administers the state.

He then expressed hope that his decision will give his fellow party members the confidence to relinquish their positions in Pakatan Rakyat governments.

In his sarcasm-laced final speech before stepping down as deputy president on Saturday, Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, said that quitting their government posts was necessary to uphold the party’s resolution to sever all ties with DAP.

Yesterday, a leader from the Ulama wing urged PAS lawmakers not to do so, arguing that the party’s officials were not obliged to do so, particularly in Selangor that he said “does not belong to DAP.”

According to Datuk Dr Khairuddin Aman Razali, the motion approved during the Muktamar that ended yesterday was also for the PAS Syura Council to consider ending co-operation with DAP, and not a decision in and of itself.

PAS on Saturday confirmed its decision to sever ties with DAP while still remaining in PR with PKR, after its motion to do so was approved without debate.

Penang Chief Minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng subsequently said it was untenable for PAS members to remain as officials in his administration.
