KUALA SELANGOR, June 6 — PAS’s Ulama wing claimed it was disappointed that its motion to sever ties with DAP was not allowed to be debated by the party’s muktamar, or annual congress today, following outcry from delegates.
The wing’s chief, Datuk Dr Mahfodz Mohamad, said it is important for PAS and its Syura Council to discuss the matter properly as it involves the Islamist party’s dignity, after it was allegedly insulted by Pakatan Rakyat (PR) ally DAP.
“The Ulama wing feels disappointed that such an important motion, which has put our dignity at stake, was accepted without debate. But the wing remains obedient to the leadership,” Mahfodz said in his wing’s winding up speech.
“We had suggested for the Syura Council to make a decision, whether to accept our motion or reject it. Even if it were rejected, we will accept the opinion of the council.”
Mahfodz said the wing had proposed the motion in order to dispel negative perception that PAS is being used by DAP.
“DAP has constantly derided and insulted PAS but we have been quiet and patient. How much longer can we be patient with DAP’s taunts and insults?” asked Mahfodz.
PAS today confirmed its decision to sever ties with DAP while still remaining in PR with PKR, after the motion proposed by the Ulama wing and the Tumpat division was approved without debate.
Earlier today, several PAS delegates tore into the party’s central working committee today for approving the motion to sever ties with DAP without debate, causing permanent chairman Hussin Ismail to overrule any discussion.
