KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 ― A DAP lawmaker called today for an investigation on why the main cause of death of six youths at last year’s Future Music Festival Asia (FMFA) was withheld from the public after it was revealed that they had died from heatstroke and not drug overdose.

DAP national legal bureau chairman Gobind Singh Deo noted that the police were reportedly aware of the post-mortem results, but did not correct their earlier statement claiming the six had died from drug overdose at the electronic dance music festival.

“There must be a full probe into why information over the primary cause of death of six persons at the 2014 Future Music Festival Asia were withheld and all those involved must face action,” Gobind said in a statement.

“I am of the view that the police failed the people here. They also failed the deceased, victims, their families and the legal system,” the Puchong MP added.

On Sunday, The Star reported University Malaya Medical Centre forensic pathology department head Prof Dr K. Nadesan as saying that heatstroke had caused the FMFA deaths and claimed the drugs had played a negligible role.

He was quoted saying that those who died had tested positive for Ecstasy, or MDMA, but it was lower than the average recreational level.

The main cause of MDMA-related death, however, is heatstroke, not drug overdose.

The Star reported today city police chief Senior Deputy Commissioner Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa as saying that the police will seek a public inquest of the six fatalities.
