GEORGE TOWN,  June 2 — DAP’s Lim Guan Eng refused today to be drawn into debate with PAS, saying the Islamist party’s recent spate of attacks against its political ally was a “cover up” of its own internal fight heading into its election this week.

He was responding to his PAS counterpart Datuk Mustafa Ali’s recent remarks about the DAP, saying the secular party appeared “over excited” with PAS.

“I feel all these attacks were intended to cover up their party’s internal campaign,” the DAP secretary-general told reporters here.

Ties between the two parties and some of their top leaders have been strained for the past few months, following PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s tabling of a private member’s Bill in Parliament for Kelantan to enforce its controversial Islamic Shariah criminal system.

Lim has been demanding a response from Hadi for allegedly breaking PAS’s commitment on the Pakatan Rakyat common manifesto as well as the Marang MP’s backing for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak over the debt-riddled 1 Malaysia Development Berhad controversy.

Lim wants Hadi to explain why he wanted to form a national unity government with Umno and why he refused to support PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in the recent Permatang Pauh by-election.

Finally, he wants Hadi to explain his statement that it is an obligation for Muslims to be angry with DAP for opposing hudud without mentioning other Muslims, non-Muslims,Sabahans and Sarawakians who had opposed the hudud law.
