KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 ― On the heels of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s reported call to his Cabinet to quit unless they back his rehabilitation plan for the debt-riddled 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), DAP leader Lim Kit Siang demanded today the ministers disclose publicly where they stand.
The veteran opposition lawmaker also questioned if senior Cabinet members, including Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and the Minister for Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal ― who appear to have distanced themselves from the 1MDB controversy ― have accepted the decision to have the Cabinet take collective responsibility on the issue.
“Have they now swallowed their reservations so as to continue to be members of the Najib Cabinet?
“Are all 35 Ministers in the Najib Cabinet prepared to announce publicly that they accept full collective responsibility for the 1MDB scandal and will ‘sink or swim’ with Najib on the issue?” Lim asked in a statement.
Utusan Malaysia reported today that Najib that told his fellow ministers to resign from the Cabinet if they disagreed with his stand on the state investment firm.
Citing an unnamed Cabinet source, the report said that none of the ministers challenged the prime minister on 1MDB in last Friday’s meeting despite being given the opportunity.
Lim said the stand from all the 35 Cabinet Ministers are particularly pertinent now and relevant as it is doubtful that the Cabinet had been presented with the entire 1MDB Roadmap on Friday.
National newswire Bernama reported on Saturday that 1MDB would be “wound down” following a deal with Abu Dhabi-based companies International Petroleum Investment Company and its Aabar Investments, which could relieve the Malaysian state-owned investment firm of RM16 billion in debt, in exchange for a number of “financial assets”. 1MDB’s operations would then reportedly be transferred to three separate firms.
Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah subsequently denied the report.
Lim said that the plan did not detail what the Abu Dhabi “But the Malaysian public have not been told what 1MDB's USD$1 billion Abu Dhabi lifeline would cost Malaysia nor other details of the agreement with IPIC and its Aabar Investments unit or other aspects of the rationalisation plan of 1MDB.
Lim, who likened the 1MDB Roadmap to plans for the country’s leader to salvage his political career, asked if Najib had given a full report to the Cabinet on all his 1MDB dealings in the past six years including its RM42 billion debt pile.
“Najib is the final approving authority for 1MDB deals, the 1MBD Board or management would be committing criminal breaches of trust, negligence and abuse powers if they had carried out major 1MDB deals without his approval,” the Gelang Patah MP said.
1MDB, a brainchild of Najib, is currently the subject of investigations by the Auditor General’s Department and Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee over its finances and a debt pile that has reportedly hit RM42 billion, and most recently cash flow problems that saw it struggle to meet a RM2 billion loan payment.
