KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 — An opposition lawmaker today called out Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak for using a teleprompter in the Dewan Rakyat when announcing the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP), claiming that it defeats the purpose of attending parliamentary proceedings.

DAP’s Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong posted on his official Facebook page a picture of Najib looking at a teleprompter while tabling Putrajaya’s plan for the next five years as Malaysia makes its final dash towards its goal of becoming a developed nation by 2020.

“Telepromter (sic) should be banned from parliament. Najib, who is rarely in parliament, comes here to speak to the TV rather than MPs,” Liew said in his post.

It is believed that this is the first time that a federal government representative has used a teleprompter in Parliament.

The standard practice is for Cabinet members to read off prepared texts when tabling motions or any government policy that is up for debate in the Dewan Rakyat.
