Guan Eng: Pakatan shadow Cabinet not possible because of Hadi

KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 — It is not possible “at this moment” for Pakatan Rakyat (PR) to form a shadow Cabinet because DAP has lost confidence in PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, Lim Guan Eng said today.

The DAP secretary-general said for the PR leadership to work, there has to be consultation among all three member parties and Hadi had failed to do that when he went ahead to pursue hudud in Kelantan.

“I don’t think it can be possible at this moment, if you want to talk about any decision on portfolios, I think at the moment, it can only be done at the party level.

“At the Pakatan level, the PR leadership is no longer functioning after all the decision has been made months ago and that decisions still stand,” he told reporters at the soft launch of the Penang Institute office in KL at the Menara 1MK.

The opposition pact’s new parliamentary leader Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail yesterday said that having a shadow Cabinet — an idea that was mooted before but failed to materialise due to irreconcilable differences — would serve as an effective oversight initiative that could help safeguard public interests.

Her proposal comes at a time when PR currently faces deep divisions over PAS’ insistence on pushing ahead with plans to implement hudud in Kelantan.

She said mending ties between PR’s warring parties will also be a top agenda, and that this will be done through a “heart-to-heart” talk with all members in line with the pact’s common policy framework.

Lim today said he does not see such cooperation happening within the opposition pact, though he "wouldn't say there is no possibility".

The Penang chief minister, however, maintained that he will continue to cooperate with PKR, but not PAS.

"Because of the hudud issue, there is no consultation whatsoever and when there is no consultation on hudud, we have no confidence there will be consultation on issues of national importance," he said.
