KLANG, May 17 — In the space of two hours, South Klang traffic police station raked in RM17,000 in summonses, before Ops Warta begins tomorrow.

South Klang police chief ACP Kamarul Zaman Mamat said counters were open from 9am for traffic offenders to settle their summonses.

“We issued 70 summonses receipts as of noon,” he said.

Rusman Mansuri, 35, who had only one compound, said he paid the RM300 fine because he feared being tracked down and arrested next week.

“It is only one but an arrest warrant was issued. To avoid being caught, I paid up,” he said.

Another motorist, Hussain Enci, 32, said he had five summonses, totalling RM2,200, each accompanied by an arrest warrant.

However, due to financial constraints, Hussain could not pay the whole sum.

“What can I do? I have to pay or risk going to court. I paid half first.”

Kamarul said Hussain was not alone. While there were some who paid their summonses on the spot, others paid in part.

He said offences like driving without licence, riding without helmets or running a red light would lead to warrants being issued.

Kamarul said counters would be open today from 9am till noon to receive enquiries and payments before police start knocking on doors.

Bukit Aman traffic police chief Datuk Mohd Fuad Abd Latiff said 33,473 offenders with warrants of arrest had cleared their summonses from May 1-15.

During the same time, 217,048 summonses had been paid.
