KOTA BARU, May 14 — Police arrested a 40-year-old man who fired random shots at customers in a restaurant in Rantau Panjang last night.

In the incident at midnight, the suspect’s car was believed to have crashed into one of the customers’ cars parked outside the restaurant and as he tried to speed off, members of the public hurled stones at his car and broke the windscreen.

Kelantan Police chief Datuk Mazlan Lazim said the man then got out of his car, pulled a fake gun and fired several shots in the direction of 20 customers in the restaurant before fleeing the scene.

He was arrested at his grandmother’s house in Kampung Bunut Susu, Pasir Mas at 7am today, Mazlan told reporters at the Kelantan Police headquarters here today.

“The suspect used a fake gun and ball bearings. He was also found to have previous criminal record related to drugs and was also tested positive for methamphetamine,” he said, adding that further investigation into the case was being done.

Earlier, Mazlan witnessed the handing over of duties to ACP Ahmad Taufek Abdullah, formerly the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) Investigation 1 deputy chief of staff, who has been appointed as the new Kelantan CID chief following the retirement of ACP Lai Yong Heng. — Bernama
